Your Coffee Brew Guide  Featuring: The Milky WayFarer Desert Drip

(Locally enjoyed. Cosmically inspired.)

A quick note before you brew:

If you’re staying with us, you probably found this page via the QR code by the coffee station.
If you’re not, welcome anyway. This is a small glimpse into how we think about mornings, rituals, and doing simple things well in the desert.

Coffee in Marfa isn’t just a drink, it’s a ritual. Whether you’re chasing the sunrise or recovering from one too many gallery openings, this guide helps you brew like a desert barista. No snobbery. No pressure. Just good coffee, better vibes, and maybe you’ll unlock the meaning of life if you’re lucky.  Before we dive into the grind (literally), here are a few quick pointers on how to brew your coffee, Marfa-style. But first, a little rundown on what makes each method a bit different. Think of it as a personality test, but for coffee.

Pour Over (Beam ahead, Judd-style)

“The art school kid of coffee.”

Taste: Bright, clean, fancy notes (like citrus and poetry).

Texture: Smooth and light—zero grit.

Control: High. You're basically the barista now.

Vibe: Slow pour, slow life, probably wearing linen.

French Press (Beam ahead, Judd-style)

“Bold. Unfiltered. Like your uncle’s opinions.”

Taste: Rich, earthy, big flavors.

Texture: Full-bodied with a little grit—consider it rustic.

Control: Medium. Steep, stir, plunge—done.

Vibe: Campfire-adjacent. Pairs well with flannel and silence.

Coffee Machine (Beam ahead, Judd-style)

“Gets the job done. Like a reliable pickup truck.”

Taste: Balanced, sometimes a little boring (but it shows up).

Texture: Middle-of-the-road, like most hotel carpet.

Control: Minimal. Press a button and manifest caffeine.

Vibe: Office break-room energy—but make it Marfa.

Let’s go, pick your method.

Pour Over

Recipe

41g coffee

700g water

Grind setting 7 (grind should be medium to slightly coarse)

Brew time 4 – 4:30 minutes

Steps

1. Place the Chemex filter in the brewer with the three-layered thick side of the filter over the spout. Rinse the filter to eliminate any paper taste, then pour out the rinse water and seat the filter fully down in the Chemex.

2. Set the Chemex on your scale and zero.

3. Add 41g of freshly ground coffee and zero your scale. 0:00–0:10: Gently pour 100g of 200°F water into the coffee grounds, spiraling from the center to the outside. Make sure all the grounds are wet. Wait until 30 seconds. 3. 0:30–0:40: Pour 125g of water (to 225g total), spiraling from the center to the outside and back in again.

4. 0:40–0:50: Pour another 125g (to 350g total), straight down the center of the cone.

5. 1:20–1:30: Pour another 125g (to 475g total), straight down the center of the cone.

6. 1:50–2:00: Pour another 125g (to 600g total), spiraling from the center to the outside and back in again.

7. 2:00–2:10: Pour 100g more straight down the middle to reach a final weight of 700g.

8. 4:00–4:30: Let it finish dripping. Your total brew time should be around 4–4.5 minutes. If it takes longer, try a coarser grind. If it’s shorter, adjust your grind to be finer.

French Press

Recipe

56g coffee

850g water

Grind setting 9 (grind should resemble coarse beach sand)

Brew time 4 minutes

Steps

1. Preheat the French Press: pour hot water into the carafe, ensuring the metal filter is fully submerged. Discard the water after the carafe is preheated.

2. Add the ground coffee to the French press.

3. Zero the scale and start a countdown timer for four minutes.

4. Carefully fill the French press with hot water, almost to the top. Ensure safety while pouring.

5. After one minute, a thick, gaseous crust will form on the surface. Gently stir the crust to fully saturate the grounds.

6. Top off the French press with hot water to reach the desired weight.

7. Position the lid and plunger on the French press, ensuring the filter sits just below the liquid's surface. This helps keep the grounds fully submerged.

8. After four minutes, slowly press the plunger down all the way. If you encounter resistance, slightly lift the plunger to clear the filter screen, then continue pressing.

9. Serve or decant: if you're not serving the coffee immediately, decant it into another preheated container to preserve the flavor.
